Handbuilding with Clay
Working with clay is widely believed to have therapeutic effects, as the process of shaping the clay connects us to our haptic sense and the ability to perceive the world through touch. In this introductory workshop, we will focus on honing the relationship between our hands, hearts, minds and material.
Participants will learn fundamental handbuilding techniques including pinching, coiling and slab building. Through these techniques participants can explore the material and build anything, whether functional or abstract.
All pieces will be fired, glazed and ready for pick up within 3 weeks of the the workshop date. All pieces that are glazed will be microwave and dishwasher safe. All experience levels welcome.
Soundbath Integration
Using crystal singing bowls, chimes, drums and other instruments to build the soundscape, We will end our day with a integration sound bath to settle back into a mindful and meditative state. Sound vibrations will flow throughout the space allowing the energy of the room to provide space for healing and rest. We will take time at the end of our day to connect on our shared practices.
Meet the Hosts
Maile and Jess met at a local community ceramics studio and connected over their shared love of clay. They soon discovered a mutual belief in the connection between self and the natural world around us, and a passion for integrating healing practices into both their teaching and personal lives.
Maile (they/she) is a Yoga Alliance certified RYT200, Sound and Reiki Master Practitioner, and Pranayama Breathwork guide. Rooted in the belief that these holistic practices help us to deepen our connection to self and the world around us, Maile is passionate about integrating these different healing modalities into both their teachings and personal life. Outside of their teachings, Maile enjoys mushroom foraging and working with clay.
Jess (she/her) is a ceramicist and educator working under the name NUNU Ceramics. Jess discovered clay when searching for a respite from a corporate creative career, and was immediately struck not only by the creative possibilities but by the calming and healing powers of working with clay. Her practice is rooted in the idea that art-making is inherent to the human experience and should be part of our everyday lives. When not engaged with her creative practice, Jess enjoys immersing herself in nature and adventuring with her animal companions.
